Why hands-on skills matter more than ever?
Kids today grow up surrounded by screens and, increasingly, by AI that can answer questions and solve problems for them in seconds. That makes the opposite kind of learning more valuable, not less: working with your hands, seeing cause and effect directly, and fixing something yourself.
Bike mechanics is a great way in. A stuck brake cable or a slipping gear doesn't respond to a quick search, it takes patience, trial and error, and the confidence to keep adjusting until it works. That builds real problem-solving skills, tolerance for getting something wrong before getting it right, and a sense of pride that comes from a repair no one did for you.
It's also a skill that stays useful for life; knowing how to keep a bike running will save every child who learns it time, money, and a fair few walks home in years to come. Long after any particular app or gadget is forgotten, they'll still know how to fix a puncture or true a wheel.
Hands-on mechanic sessions for kids aged 8-12, working on their own bike. Each day has a different focus - safety checks, brakes, gears, tyres - finishing with a full tune-up. Runs 9am-3pm, in line with school drop-off/pick-up. Bring a packed lunch, water bottle, and old/dark clothes - it can get oily!
The day's focus will be:
Monday: Carry out a basic safety check on their bike, replace and adjust the saddle, handlebars, pedals, and make minor spoke adjustments.
Tuesday: Understand how brakes work, change brake pads and cables, and adjust them correctly
Wednesday: Understand gears, look after your chain, clean, lubricate, replace gear cables, and how to keep them shifting smoothly
Thursday: Complete a puncture repair, understand how tyres, tubes and wheels work.
Friday: Understanding bearing systems.
The classes are led by Diego; he has almost two decades of experience teaching bike maintenance to an array of groups of different ages and abilities, including people aiming to achieve full qualifications. Diego is DBS checked.
